We have been retained by one of the foremost names in mining finance and asset management to lead the search to identify a Director, Project Evaluations to join their team in either Vancouver or Toronto.

Our client is looking for a business-minded mining engineer with roughly 15 years of varied development, operational, and analytical experience to be a key member of their technical due diligence team. The Incumbent will (work with a team and have responsibility to) help identify, model and value potential investment & finance opportunities, while maintaining a close eye on performance of current project portfolio.

The Incumbent will be responsible for conducting fundamental research and due diligence work on advanced projects within private and public metals and mining companies across all commodities, while tracking the status of active loans and investments. The position presents an opportunity to contribute analytic expertise and operational insights to a dynamic investment portfolio within one of the most prominent asset management firms in the industry.

Responsibilities:

  • Primary function of the role is focused on due diligence management and tracking the status of active loan & investment portfolio.
  • Directly or indirectly originate and assist in winning mandates through industry connections.
  • Review and analyze mining and mineral sector press releases, regulatory filings, feasibility studies, 43-101 reports, investor presentations and stock market analyst reports in order to perform analysis which will lead to investment decisions.
  • Develop and maintain financial models
  • Review and analyze financial statements of private and public companies
  • Assist senior members of Metals & Mining team with tracking and analyzing minerals and metals commodity markets.
  • Manage the due diligence process for each investment opportunity
  • Will work with outside consultants during the due diligence process to gather information and data as required.
  • The individual should have a large ‘expert network’ and know who to select in the consulting world for different tasks on resource estimation, mining, metallurgy, engineering, infrastructure, environmental, permitting, etc.  Every due diligence and tracking exercise is different so the individual needs to know who to call for the best advice.
  • Assist in negotiation of deal terms and closing of transactions, including reviewing relevant legal documents.
  • The individual should be able to directly or indirectly originate and assist in winning a mandate through industry connections.
  • Compilation of regular status reports on every outstanding loan, plus updates on the highest priority pre-loan due diligence exercises.

Qualifications:

    • 10-20 years relevant, varied experience in mine development, construction, commissioning and operational activities, either with mining companies and/or major mining industry consultancies.
    • High-level communication skills to work closely with listed issuers, team members and fund LPs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mine engineering, with the ideal applicant being a registered Professional Engineer in good standing.
  • Ability to understand controls on mineralization, structures, grade distribution, etc
  • Understanding of mining methods and mineral processing
  • Strong mining software experience –GEOVICA: Whittle, Surpac, Minex, Gems etc
  • High-level capabilities of block modelling

 

The ideal applicant will have had previous experience working in a due diligence capacity within a corporate development unit of an operating mining company or within another institution. Given the requirements, the Incumbent must be willing to travel and participate in every major pre-loan [and investment] due diligence site visit and the majority of subsequent physical inspections during the term of the loan (and investments).
